ACADEMICS

The College offers courses on undergraduate level both in science and arts streams. There are 2 (two) self financed courses in the form of Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA) and Post graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA). Apart from these the college also offers some professional and vocational courses.    
Higher Secondary (10+2) courses are also integral part of the academics of the college. 
 

 

HIGHER SECONDARY (10 + 2) COURSES

Higher Secondary- Arts

The subjects that are offered in Higher Secondary-Arts include: English, MIL (Assamese, Bengali and Hindi)/ Alternative English, Economics, Education, History, Logic and Philosophy, Home Science, Mathematics, Political Science, Sanskrit, Computer Science & application.

Higher Secondary- Science

The subjects that are offered in Higher Secondary-Science include: English, MIL (Assamese, Bengali and Hindi)/ Alternative English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Statistics, Home Science, Computer Science & application, Sanskrit, Logic and Philosophy.

Important Information

    • In both Arts and Science courses English and MIL/ Alternative English are compulsory subjects list.
    • In addition, a student of Arts Stream has to study three more subjects listed in the Higher Secondary Arts subjects. If desired, a fourth subject may be offered as additional subject.
    • A student of Science Stream has to study three subjects listed in the Higher Secondary Science subjects list above, in addition to the two compulsory subjects. A forth subject may also be offered, if desired.
    • Students offering Computer Science & application in both Arts and Science streams must also offer Mathematics as one of the elective subjects.

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES

The College offers courses of study in both Arts and Science faculties upto Degree Major level. The medium of instruction is English. However, Assamese is also used as complementary to English. Conforming to the national pattern of education, 10+2+3 structure is followed in the state of Assam and the Three Year Degree Course (TDC) has been introduced from the 1984-85 session. Initially the Three Year Degree Course comprised of two parts: Part-I and Part-II. Part-I Final Examination is held at the end of the second year and Part II Final Examination at the end of the third year.

However, in 2004, Gauhati University has changed its undergraduate degree programme from the 2+1 pattern to the Part-I, Part-II and Part-III i.e. 1+1+1 pattern, where final examination is held at the end of each year. The college is presently adopting the 1+1+1 pattern of undergraduate course

Undergraduate course - Science

Undergraduate course in science is available in both Major and General Courses. The subjects offered in undergraduate science include: Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Home Science Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology.
The College has provisions for Major courses in Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Home Science Mathematics, Physics and Zoology. A student-offering Major in Botany or Zoology must have Chemistry as one of the subjects. Likewise, with Physics or Chemistry Major, a student must offer Mathematics as one of the subjects.

A student must offer English along with a group of three Elective subjects. A student having major must offer two other Elective subjects.
Combinations of subjects
    • A student may submit one application showing preferences of Major in 3 (three) subjects from the above list. She should not submit two forms indicating different preferences. However, she should submit separate forms for Science and Arts streams if she desires to be considered for both the streams.
    • A student will be allowed to offer one of the following combinations from among the three indicated by her in order of preference in the application form, in keeping with the norms fixed by the Gauhati University vis-à-vis the combination of subjects.

General or functional English is also compulsory in general course.

 

Undergraduate course -Arts

 

Undergraduate course in Arts is available in both Major and General Courses. The subjects offered in undergraduate Arts include: English, MIL (Assamese, Bengali, Hindi), Alternative English, Elective Languages (Assamese, Bengali, Hindi and Sanskrit), Economics, Education, History, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Statistics, Computer Science, Home Science.

The College provides Major courses in Assamese, Bengali, Economics, Education, English, History, Home Science, Mathematics, Philosophy and Political Science.  A student having Major in any of the above subjects other than a Language subject must offer two compulsory subjects (English and MIL/Alternative English) along with one Elective subject.

SELF-FINANCED COURSES

There are 3 (three) self financed courses in the dept. of Computer Science.  These are - Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA), Post graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) and Computer literacy programme. Both BCA and PGDCA are affiliated to Gauhati University and the certificate of Computer literacy pragramme is issued by the college. The eligibility criteria, duration etc. are mentioned below.

COURSES INTENDED TO BE OPENED

The college intends to open Post Graduate course in Assamese and English in the year 2010. Besides, a new subject viz. Microbiology would also be opened in the year 2010 in undergraduate level. University Grant Commission has already sanctioned a grant for this.

DISTANCE EDUCATION

Handique Girls' College houses a centre for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) at its premises. The centre conducts regular counseling sessions in over a dozen educational programmes of IGNOU. It has a full fledged library and a well equipped audio-video library. In January 2006, the centre was presented an EDUSAT terminal by IGNOU, New Delhi. The terminal facilitates students to interact with faculty members of other institutions nationwide. Faculty members and non-teaching staff of the college are actively involved in the administration and counseling sessions of the centre.

SHIFT

Classes of the College are held in only one shift i.e. Day shift. The classes start from 9.00 a.m.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR

Academic Session - The Official academic session of the College is from May to April.
The College has undertaken a new endeavor to introduce an Academic Calendar in accordance with Academic Calendar of the Gauhati University from last few years. Different activities of the College will be carried on according to this calendar as far as practicable.
